Last time I left you with a metaphor.

The invisible bridge.

The one that sits between freelancing and making deals that pay you whether you’re working or not.

I said I’d show you how to walk across it.

Let me throw out the sand so you can see the invisible bridge Indiana Jones style.

In 2024 I was at a routine physical.

Doctor’s doing his thing.

Exam’s almost over.

And I said “Hold on, let me show you something.”

I did a partial sit-up.

A bulge pushed through the skin of my stomach.

Like a small alien trying to break free.

“What is this, a hernia or something?”

He wrote something down.

“Diastasis Recti.”

I went home and searched it.

Found a woman’s YouTube videos.

The thing that caught my eye?

No surgery.

She can heal this naturally.

I signed up for her course.

Went through it.

Did the belly breaths, the stretches, the exercises.

Within a year, the condition had corrected itself.

Still do the exercises today.

It’s just part of life now.

I know how to keep it from ever coming back.

Two years after I bought that course, she sent an email about her personal sessions.

I was on that list.

I read it.

And a thought hit me…

What if we ran an auction to her audience for those sessions?

I sent her the offer by email.

Then some follow-ups.

She responded after the 7th email.

She said she gets pitched by email every single day.

But because I was an alumni student, she felt I understood her business model in a way other marketers couldn’t.

She was willing to hear more.

So I recorded a Loom and sent it to her.

I opened with a testimonial.

Told her what the program had done for me, how I still use it today, how I know how to keep the condition from ever coming back.

Then I walked through the details of the deal.

That Loom locked in the coffee date.

The coffee date led to the auction test we’re running this Tuesday.

And it started with a purchase I made because I was in pain and needed help.

This is one of two partnership deals I’ve closed this past month alone.

Both follow one simple principle.

The second one goes back to 2016.

I paid $2,000 to join a productivity membership run by an internationally best-selling author in his space.

Used his system for the last ten years.

Built real things with it.

Then recently I typed his name into Google.

His frameworks were everywhere.

Repackaged, renamed, resold by people who’d never paid him a dollar.

Course pages ripping his exact language.

YouTube channels built on his ideas.

And there he was — the original — not capitalizing on any of it.

I reached out.

Not as a stranger.

As someone who had invested in his work a decade ago and could point to specific results.

I partnered with Tony Teegarden, a more experienced deal maker, to help structure it properly.

Our first test flopped.

Small list segment.

No affinity with the author.

We were ready to walk.

Then the partner reached out to us.

He wanted to keep going.

He offered us his entire 85,000-person list.

60% of every sale we bring in.

We told him once we hit a certain threshold, we’d negotiate a new percentage.

We didn’t want him pressing the unfair button.

He agreed.

Think about that for a second…

We ran a test that didn’t work.

We were prepared to leave.

And the partner came back with a bigger deal.

That doesn’t happen when you show up as a vendor.

It happens when you show up as someone who believed in the work long before there was a deal on the table.

All of that started with a $2,000 purchase I made ten years ago.

Two deals.

Both came from the same simple principle.

But the illusion feels real to Neo because it’s all he’s ever known.

Another great example?

When Neo fights Morpheus after learning Kung Fu…

Neo catches his breath and Morpheus says:

”You think that’s air you’re breathing? Hmmm.”

Neo wasn’t breathing at all.

The same reality applies to freelancers.

Why I fell in the gap between freelancing and dealmaking

After trying to make the jump and falling flat on my face multiple times since 2023, here’s what I understand now:

I tried to jump the gap using the same time-for-money programming I’d always known.

I’ll confess…

The most attractive part of dealmaking was the money.

$10k, $25k, $100k campaigns.

Within 1–14 days.

Using a fun auction or one email and a simple Google doc.

Nothing else comes close.

Here’s where the old programming trapped me

I only knew how to earn money UPFRONT.

Send invoice.

Get paid.

Do the work.

Send the next invoice.

Dealmakers?

We make risk-free proposals and don’t collect until the money hits the partner’s account.

I tried that…

Except I chose partners based on how much I stood to earn.

The NEED for big money instead of good partnerships sent me into that gap, over and over.

The reality?

I approached deals like a vendor.

What did I get for that?

I did free work for people who didn’t see me as a partner.

I put up with garbage from “partners” because “the money would be worth it.”

Guess how much money came out of those deals…

Zilch.

The “deal” that changed everything

Something shifted in December 2025.

My mentor Tony Teegarden referred me to someone who needed a dealmaker.

We had a coffee date and an offer call.

$12k offer, 50/50 split.

Finally… a real chunk of change!

The campaign got scheduled.

Then rescheduled.

Sickness, delays, issues on his end.

January 1, 2026?

We’re finally supposed to kick off.

But one thing kept nagging me: he stalled on giving me CRM access.

That told me everything.

If getting CRM access was this hard, what would getting paid look like on a $50–100k campaign?

I killed the deal.

Told him politely it wasn’t going to work.

Ironically…

That was the moment I made the jump.

Not by landing a winning campaign.

By being the CHOOSER and refusing to let partners treat me like a vendor.

I broke out of the time-for-money Matrix.

Like Morpheus tells Neo before the impossible jump:

”You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear. Doubt. Disbelief. Free your mind.”

My fear, doubt, and disbelief?

I’m not a dealmaker until I land a deal that pays me.

Now I know the real power is the freedom to say NO…

Because I don’t NEED any deal to work out.

My week looks the same either way.

The reality for dealmakers?

Dealmakers are few and far between.

Successful businesses that need dealmakers to turn unused or underutilized assets into cash?

Thousands upon thousand.

That first jump has led to more partnerships.

I’m now working with two good partners.

And both came from one simple principle.

A principle that builds an almost invisible bridge from freelancing to dealmaking.

I wish I’d known it back in 2023.

I’ll break it down next time.

Every holiday gift for 20 plus years?

She bought it from late-night TV shopping on QVC.

It’s a memory I’ll always cherish though.

May mean no power on the 28th at midnight.

So they say yes reluctantly.

Work through the weekend.

Kiss their client’s butt...

Instead of kissing their kid on the head and telling them how proud they are of catching that ball in left field.

All while silently screaming inside.

Wishing they could escape.

Here’s the thing nobody talks about...

The escape isn’t grinding harder for the same demanding clients.

That’s the QVC way to bankruptcy.

Yesterday I watched two more companies pull the rug out from under freelancers.

Poe cut free credits by 90%.

Here’s what most marketers don’t understand.

When you lead with the pitch...you’re asking someone to make a buying decision before they even know if they LIKE you.

It’s like proposing marriage on the first date.

And your prospect’s brain does what ANY normal person’s brain does when a stranger asks for commitment...

It runs.

Or in this case...blocks.

The good news is...

There’s a whole other way to do this.

A way where people are WAITING for us to make an offer.

Where they’re already sold before we ever mention price.

That’s preselling.

And when we get good at it?

We stop white-knuckling through sales calls hoping they say yes.

We stop getting ghosted after pitches.

In fact, we stop pitching all together.

We stop wondering why people who seemed interested suddenly disappear.

Because we’ve already done the work BEFORE the ask.

In late 2022...

I was looking for new software to build my brand.

Then I see this ad...

“Lifetime access to Pipeline Pro - only $37!”

The picture in the ad was pretty funny.

A couple of dudes posing in front of a tombstone showing expensing funnel software in the grave.

I’m thinking...”at that price it’s a no brainer.”

So I buy it.

Then I get inside and realize...

I just bought a white labeled GoHighLevel subaccount.

Now here’s what’s funny to me...

I’d JUST cancelled my GHL subscription because I couldn’t keep paying $97/month.

But I convince myself it’s still a good deal.

I mean...it’s the same platform for a one-time $37.

Know what I mean?

Then the nickel-n-dime antics started.

Want the automation suite?

Free trial...then $97/month.

Want to set up a custom email domain?

$250 for “Inbox Advantage.”

See what they did there?

“Lifetime” didn’t mean lifetime ACCESS to the tools.

It meant lifetime access to a platform that you can’t grow a business from without upgrading.

I had to PAY for the actual tools I needed.

I played this little game for about 5 months (see pic).

Early 2023, I killed all the upgrades.

I still have my “lifetime” account sitting there.

Haven’t touched it in 3 years.

Never will again.

A costly lesson in what most software companies mean by “lifetime.”

However, I found another software that really did give me everything I needed.

Systeme dot io.

I began with the Starter plan for $27 / mo then later upgraded to the Webinar plan for $47 / mo.

That’s what I’ve been using to manage my business and build my email list these last 3 years.

I’ve never stayed this long with any software and I’ve got no plans to leave.

Systeme has done a fantastic job of improving the software over that time...

They’ve added a lot of features that make it a competitive alternative to GHL…

But, they haven’t increased the price or forced an upgrade on their users.

Just more value for the price we’re already paying each month.

They even recently opened up sub-accounts.

These sub-accounts aren’t throttled either.

Each one has all the full features of the main account holder.

That gave me an idea that might just be dumb but here goes...

Truth is?

I don’t give a crap.

Never been a sports guy....

American Football is kinda meh.

I might watch...but only for the commercials.

Some are great and others are terrible.

Businesses dropping $8 million to $10 million for 30 seconds in front of 130 million eyeballs.

That’s insane money.

And here’s the thing I know about myself...

Even when a commercial makes me laugh or gets me all warm and fuzzy...

I almost NEVER go buy the thing they just spent millions on.

I have a feeling I’m not alone.

The data backs this up too.

Direct ROI on these ads?

Pretty terrible actually.

Think about it...

Businesses spending millions to interrupt people who are there for the game (or commercials).

They’re not looking for products.

They’re not in buying mode.

They’re reaching for another chicken wing.

Now compare that to what my buddy Tony Teegarden just did...

He ran what we call a “FUN auction” at the end of December.

3 hours.

Pulled in just under $100k.

Zero ad spend to get in front of strangers.

How?

He made a deal with someone who already had the audience he wanted.

Someone whose people ALREADY trusted them.

And because of that one campaign...

That partner is now handing Tony a 200,000 person list to run another campaign.

See the difference?

Super Bowl ads = spray and pray to cold strangers eating nachos

Deal making = warm audience of peeps who are already primed

One costs millions and hopes for brand recognition.

The other costs nothing and builds a business with people ready to pay $10k-$25k.

Turns out when you have the right tools and clear instructions, even shaky hands can build something solid.

So, I killed a deal at lunch on the 1st because the partner couldn’t get me CRM access.

He got sick with food poisoning before Christmas and we pushed the first email to the 1st.

I was told 5 or 6 times I’d have CRM access “today”.

Never happened.

I told him I needed it by Wednesday morning so I could run tests and make sure everything was working.

I followed up at around 11 am asking about access.

Silence.

I saw multiple times he was online on Facebook.

We both knew the 1st was launch day.

The former CHASER part of me wanted to make excuses for him.

Did I really want to flush away an opportunity to make $6k per sale?

But the CHOOSER part of me realized that if its this difficult to get CRM access...

What’s it going to be like on pay day when I bring in sales?

After some quick advice from the deal making master Tony Teegarden on how to approach the partner...

I killed the deal.

I told him Peanut Butter and Mustard are perfectly fine but don’t make a good sammich.

Guess what happened in less that 2 minutes?

He replied.

What’s done is done and no going back.

The funny part is...

But honestly?

You’ll probably think I’m crazy.

On Friday I took the entire day off.

Jumped in my car at 8:30 AM and drove 2 hours from Virginia to North Carolina.

For a 15-minute chiropractor appointment.

Then turned around and drove 2 hours back home…

After eating at a local BBQ place for lunch (I can’t skip out on good NC BBQ!).

4 hours of driving for 15 minutes.

My wife definitely thinks I’ve lost it.

She knows her “crack addict” husband and his love for Chiropractic care!

See, I sit at my desk almost all day building my online business.

I’m slouched over and my body reminds me of my poor posture with pain signals in my lower back.

I don’t have extreme back pain or anything like that, but still I can feel the compression on my spine.

Now...I could’ve gone to any of the dozen chiropractors within 20 minutes of my house.
